- Notes from Monday, March 28, contemplating departure... from Seattle to Charlotte, and back again. Some of my route is
loosely sketched out, most of it will unfold as I proceed. I recall Jim
Bronson in the intro to Then Came Bronson... Bronson
is leaving San
Francisco on his newly acquired Harley-Davidson and pulls up to an
intersection... Seaside... a commuter fellow in a car beside him asks
where he's headed. Bronson replies "oh, wherever I end up, I guess." That's the spirit! That's what I've always wanted to do and tomorrow I
shall. I'll leave out of Seattle tracking south toward Portland. From Portland I'll follow the Columbia River eastward through the Columbia
River Gorge. Where the great river flows out of Washington
State from the north, I'll head south across the high desert of Oregon to
Reno and Virginia City in Nevada, and Lake Tahoe. San Francisco by way
of Altamont Pass seems like a good idea. From the Bay Area I'll head down the
Pacific coast, passing through Watsonville, Monterey, Big Sur, and on to
Los Angeles. From LA I'll head eastward across the southern tier,
through Las Vegas to Grand Canyon. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas... "wherever I end up, I guess"... and on to North Carolina. I'll
stay on the back roads as much as possible...
