Day 8 - Tuesday, April 5, 2005 - Across the Sierra Nevada to Altamont Pass
 
Morning at South Lake Tahoe...
 
         
 
Over the Sierra Nevada, San Francisco bound...
 
       
 
 
 
Placerville, California. On the western slope of the Sierra Nevada... old Pony Express country...
 
       
 
   
 
From Placerville I headed south through the California Gold Country to Angels Camp...
 
       
 
     
 
Amador City...
 
Sutter Creek...
 
       
 
       
 
Proceeding on...
 
     
 
Angels Camp...
 
         
 
Proceeding on... westward, out of the Gold Country hills into the San Joaquin Valley...
 
       
 
 
 
Straight through Stockton, east to west... crossing under I-5. I left the I-5 at Vancouver, Washington at the Columbia River back on Day 4 of the Big Drive (April 1), staying well to the east of that North-South interstate until this point... 
 
West of Stockton I reached the eastern extremes of the San Francisco Bay area, winding toward Livermore...
   
And then, the great wind farms of Altamont Pass... about 40 miles east of San Francisco Bay...

From Altamont Pass I took the 580, the 680, and the 780 to Vallejo, then 37 and 101 down to San Rafael where I put in for the night...
